The short answer

The best place to buy dining table placemats in Australia is Gleemium if you want natural fibres made by hand, sold as matching sets, with free delivery on every order. Choose Bed Threads for pure linen, Sage & Clare for bright handmade colour, Linen House for cheap single mats, and Pottery Barn for round jute. We ranked all five on four things: natural fibre, handwork, the cost of setting a table for four, and delivery.

Disclosure: Gleemium publishes this blog. Every price comes from each shop's own website, checked on 27 October 2026 and linked below.

What it really costs to set a table for four

Most shops sell placemats one at a time, so the shelf price can look cheaper than it is. We priced the cheapest natural-fibre way to get four mats at each shop, then checked what delivery adds to that order.

Chart comparing the cost of four natural-fibre placemats and delivery at five Australian shops
Shop Cheapest natural set of 4 Fibre Delivery on that order
Gleemium $56 Hand-braided jute Free
Linen House $55.96 (4 x $13.99) Braided jute Paid (free over $150, or $80 for members)
Bed Threads $59.95 French flax linen Paid (free over $100)
Pottery Barn $111.80 to $156 (4 x $27.95 to $39) Jute Priced by postcode
Sage & Clare $156 (4 x $39) Hand-crocheted cotton Free (over $150)

What this tells you: Gleemium's round jute set is the cheapest delivered set of four in this guide, because delivery is always free.

1. Gleemium: handwoven sets, free delivery

14 sets Β |Β  cotton, jute, cotton-jute Β |Β  $56 to $96 for four Β |Β  free delivery from Perth Β |Β  14-day returns

Love: every set is handwoven or hand-braided, so each mat is a little different. Nine sets are cotton, four are jute and one blends cotton with jute. The cotton mats go in a cold, gentle wash. Most sets are four mats, and the jute set of 7 covers a bigger table. The middle price is about $79 a set, or roughly $20 a mat. Start with the round jute set ($56) or the minimal cotton set ($86).

Think twice: the jute sets are wipe-clean only, not washable. Product pages do not list mat sizes yet. Three of the 14 sets were sold out when we checked.

2. Bed Threads: pure French flax linen

Set of 4 Β |Β  100% French flax linen Β |Β  $59.95 Β |Β  free shipping over $100 Β |Β  ships in 1 to 2 days

Love: linen in plain colours, sold as a set of four in a linen storage sack. It goes in a cold, gentle wash and softens over time. Bed Threads offers free exchanges or store credit within 45 days.

Think twice: Bed Threads does not describe these mats as handmade, and you pay delivery on a single set because it sits under the $100 free-shipping line.

3. Sage & Clare: hand-crocheted colour

Sold singly Β |Β  crochet cotton $39, straw $42, paracord $35 Β |Β  free shipping over $150, $10 under

Love: bold colours and handwork. The crochet mats are hand-crocheted cotton, and four of them reach the free-shipping line.

Think twice: four mats cost $140 to $168. Sage & Clare says its placemats are not machine washable and not heat resistant. The paracord mats are cord, not a plant fibre.

4. Linen House: cheapest single mats

Sold singly Β |Β  cotton, jute, linen Β |Β  $8.99 to $19.99 Β |Β  free shipping over $150 ($80 for members)

Love: low prices across three fibres. The Plait mats come in braided cotton or jute, and the Nimes mat is pure stone-washed linen at 33 x 45 cm for $19.99.

Think twice: most mats are on sale, so prices move. There is no mention of handwork, and a small order pays delivery.

5. Pottery Barn: round jute

Sold singly Β |Β  100% jute, 38 cm round Β |Β  $27.95 to $39 each Β |Β  delivery priced by postcode

Love: a clear size, a neat round shape and several colours.

Think twice: four mats at full price cost $156, it is spot clean only, and delivery is extra.

Pick the fibre first

Placemat fibre guide comparing jute, cotton, linen, straw and paracord on feel, care and eco notes

Jute and flax are two of the lowest-input fibres you can put on a table. The FAO describes jute as a rain-fed crop that needs little fertiliser or pesticide, and says jute fibre is biodegradable (FAO). The European Commission says flax for linen is mostly rain-fed and needs little fertiliser (European Commission). Cotton is a natural plant fibre too, and a washable cotton mat can last for years.

Frequently asked questions

Which placemats are the most eco-friendly?

Mats made from plant fibres such as jute, cotton and linen are the most natural choice. Jute and flax are both mostly rain-fed crops. Cord mats such as paracord are usually synthetic.

Can you wash jute placemats?

Usually not. Gleemium and Pottery Barn both say to wipe or spot clean jute and avoid soaking. If you want mats you can machine wash, choose cotton or linen.

Are placemats heat resistant?

Most fabric and fibre placemats are not made for hot pots. Sage & Clare says its placemats are not heat resistant. Put a trivet under anything straight from the oven.

What size should a placemat be?

Rectangular mats are often about 33 x 45 cm, like Linen House's Nimes mat, and round ones about 38 cm across, like Pottery Barn's Colton. Leave room for a plate, cutlery and a glass.

Do placemats come in sets?

Some do. Gleemium and Bed Threads sell sets of four, and Gleemium also has a set of seven. Sage & Clare, Linen House and Pottery Barn sell mats one at a time.
