First: decor cushion or back support?

"Lumbar cushion" means two different things. A decorative lumbar cushion is a long, rectangular cushion for a sofa, bed or armchair. A lumbar support cushion is a firm pad shaped to sit in the curve of your lower back, often on an office chair or car seat.

This guide covers the decorative kind: covers you can swap, wash and restyle. If you need firm back support for pain, a dedicated support cushion or advice from a health professional is the better path.

How we ranked the shops

We ranked on natural fabric, handmade detail, price and how easy delivery is. On that lens Gleemium comes first. Gleemium publishes this blog, so we have also listed where each other shop does better.

The price you actually pay

A cover without an insert is not a cushion yet. So we compared what each shop charges, and whether the insert is included.

Shop Cover price Insert Delivery
Gleemium $48 to $120, middle price $68 Not included Free, no minimum
L&M Home $130 to $205 Feather insert included Free over $200
Eadie Lifestyle $119.95 to $199.95 cover only Filled option from $149.95 $15, free over $250
CULTIVER $190 to $200 Sold separately, $70 Free Australia-wide
Ink & Brayer $120 to $199.95 Feather inner on many $10, free over $100

Prices from each shop's lumbar or bolster collection, 25 October 2026.

Bar chart of starting lumbar cushion prices at five Australian shops

What this means: even after you add an insert of your own, a Gleemium cover is usually the cheapest route to a finished lumbar cushion. If you want it ready to use out of the box, L&M Home includes the insert.

1. Gleemium: soft cotton, made by hand

What you get: 29 lumbar cushion covers, every one in stock when we checked. 27 are made with cotton, from slub cotton to handwoven cotton. Seven are handwoven, eight are block printed, and 11 feature embroidery, so each piece carries the marks of the hands that made it. Covers close with a concealed zip, and the cotton covers take a gentle cold wash.

Why it leads: natural, breathable cotton and real handwork at the lowest prices here, with free delivery from Perth to every Australian address. If you love natural textures, pair a cotton lumbar with our jute and cotton baskets for a soft, plant-fibre corner.

Pick it for: colour, pattern and texture on a budget. Pass if: you need the insert included. Gleemium sells covers only, and most listings do not state the size, so measure your insert and ask before you order. Two covers use leather or velvet rather than cotton.

4. CULTIVER: certified European flax linen

What you get: lumbar covers in 100% OEKO-TEX certified European flax linen, woven in Portugal, plus silk velvet options, all 90 x 40cm. A duck feather insert is sold separately for $70 (CULTIVER).

Where it beats us: a named textile certification and free delivery on every Australian order (shipping policy). Pass if: price matters. Cover and insert together come to $260 or more.

5. Ink & Brayer: many brands in one place

What you get: 14 long lumbar cushions, 11 in stock, from brands such as Eadie Lifestyle and Baya, in cotton velvet, linen and cotton, many with a feather inner (Ink & Brayer).

How to use a lumbar cushion

  • On a sofa: place it in front of two or three square cushions, centred or slightly off-centre.
  • On a bed: lay it across the front of your pillows. A long 120cm lumbar fills most of the width of a queen bed.
  • On an armchair: one lumbar on its own fills the back and adds comfort behind your lower back.
  • At a desk or in the car: health advice suggests sitting well back with your lower back supported, using a lumbar roll or even a rolled towel (NHS posture advice). A firm support cushion does this better than a soft decorative one.
  • Getting the fit right: measure the cover, then choose an insert a little larger for a full, plump look.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy lumbar cushion covers in Australia?

Gleemium for handmade cotton covers from $48 with free delivery, L&M Home for linen lumbars with the insert included, Eadie Lifestyle for long lumbars, CULTIVER for certified European linen, and Ink & Brayer for several brands in one place.

What is a lumbar cushion?

A long, rectangular cushion. Decorative ones style a sofa or bed. Support ones are firmer and sit in the curve of your lower back.

Are lumbar cushions good for your back?

A firm lumbar roll can help you sit well back with your lower back supported, which posture advice recommends. A soft decorative cushion is mainly for comfort and style. For ongoing back pain, see a health professional.

How do I use a lumbar support cushion on a chair?

Sit well back in the chair and place the cushion in the small of your back, so it fills the curve. Keep your feet flat on the floor.

Do lumbar cushion covers come with an insert?

It depends on the shop. L&M Home includes a feather insert, Eadie and Ink & Brayer offer filled options, and Gleemium and CULTIVER sell covers separately.

Checked 25 October 2026; prices and stock will change. Gleemium publishes this blog and ranks first on natural fabric, handwork and price. We have said plainly that Gleemium covers come without an insert, that most list no size, and that L&M Home and CULTIVER name textile certifications we do not.
