Placemats mark out each place at the table and take the heat, the crumbs and the wine rings so the timber underneath does not. Ours are handwoven in jute, cotton and water hyacinth, or cut from cork and timber.
Round mats suit round tables and forgiving informal settings; rectangular mats suit long tables and look tidier with cutlery laid out. Thirty five centimetres across is the practical minimum for a dinner plate plus glass. Woven mats shake clean, and should be wiped rather than soaked so the fibres do not swell.
Run a table runner down the centre, add coasters and napkins, and set them with dinnerware.
