A throw is the thing people reach for without thinking, which is why it is worth buying one in a fibre that feels good rather than one that only photographs well. Ours are handwoven in cotton and wool, with fringed or plain edges.
For a sofa, look for at least one hundred and twenty by one hundred and fifty centimetres, or the throw becomes a decorative scarf that nobody can actually use. Woollen pieces want airing rather than frequent washing; cotton handles a cold gentle machine wash. Dry flat in shade so the fringe does not twist.
